The Summer that west Germany and central China will Never Forget

It was July 14, 2021, when raging floodwaters came rushing through parts of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia in West Germany. The floodwaters carried with them trees, cars, houses, animals, and hundreds of humans. A week later, torrential rains brought flooding to Zhengzhou, Henan Province, central China, trapping commuters in a subway. Why do we experience flooding even during summer? Let’s look into the matter.

The Painful Impact of Ondoy Typhoon

Who would forget how the Ondoy typhoon (international name: Ketsana) brought raging winds and an extended period of torrential rainfall to Metro Manila, Philippines on September 26, 2009? The victims of the calamity could not help but crouch in fear as they got stuck on the roofs of their houses with neither food nor water. And their only choice? Wait for rescue. 11 years ago now, but who will forget the horrors of Ondoy and the 872,097 people who got affected?

Is River Dredging Enough to Prevent Flood Risk?

Ulysses (international name: Vamco) brought back the agonizing memories of Ondoy (international name: Ketsana), which also caused drastic flooding in 2009. Ulysses, the 21st tropical cyclone that entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility in 2020, prompted downpours particularly across Metro Manila from the evening of November 11 to the morning of the 12th. Thus, Marikina River’s water level unexpectedly swelled up to 22 meters at 11 AM on November 12.

To prevent this from happening again, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) started its river dredging operation on Feb 17, 2021.
