Sewage and floodwater go hand in hand. When there’s flood, contaminants and germs flow with it. Here are some tips to avoid contacting them.

There is no avoiding the fact that contaminated sewage water will always flow with the floodwaters. It is where pathogens like bacteria, viruses, mold spores, or protozoans are present in large numbers in sewage wastes.

The extent of the contamination will depend on the size of the affected area. The greater the area the greater the contamination coverage and spread of the pathogens. Even flood waters that were not in contact with raw sewage can be contaminated with the microbiological organisms from animal wastes, street runoffs and natural soil.

Vector-borne diseases are spreading as climate change worsens . Diseases that were once seasonal, like dengue fever, is now turning into yearly outbreaks.

Vector-borne diseases like malaria, dengue, yellow fever, and West Nile fever all come from one source – mosquitoes.

These insects thrive on stagnant water where they lay eggs. No doubt, they are prolific during wet seasons when there are plenty of breeding grounds for them. Once matured, they fly off to feed blood from humans or animals.
It’s through biting humans or animals that these mosquitoes transmit diseases. The parasites in their saliva is what cause these diseases. They are typically most active during rainy season but, with climate change, mosquitoes are now swarming throughout the year.

Two weather systems are currently affecting the conditions in different areas across the Philippines. The Northeast Monsoon or Amihan is causing cold winds over the extreme northern Luzon; and the Easterlies or the humid air coming from the Pacific Ocean on the eastern portion of the country.

PAGASA said in their latest bulletin that cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected over #Caraga and #Davao region; partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains over #Batanes and #BabuyanIslands. Meanwhile, #MetroManila and the rest of the country may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers.

In their latest bulletin, PAGASA said that they are monitoring the Low-Pressure Area (LPA) outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), which was last estimated 1,695 km East of Mindanao.

Meanwhile, the Easterlies or humid air are forecast to affect the eastern portion of the country.
